Key Topics Covered
LBO Mechanics & Value Creation
Covers the three primary return drivers — EBITDA growth, debt paydown, and multiple expansion — along with how leverage amplifies equity returns and why there is an optimal leverage level beyond which IRR actually declines.
Capital Structure Hierarchy
Walks through every debt tranche from revolver to mezzanine, explaining the pricing logic, seniority, and repayment mechanics for each layer. Includes analysis of underwater debt trading values.
Paper LBO Calculations
Features multiple timed paper LBO scenarios including forward calculations of MOIC and IRR, backward-solving for entry multiples given a target return, and a complex multi-part case study comparing amortizing bank debt vs. bullet bonds.
IRR Sensitivity & Rules of Thumb
Covers the four essential IRR benchmarks every candidate should memorize and ranks the key model inputs — exit multiple, EBITDA growth, interest rates, and revenue growth — by their relative impact on returns.
Advanced Return Concepts
Explores PIK debt mechanics and their compounding effect on exit leverage, why debt repayment vs. EBITDA reinvestment creates dramatically different value, and creative strategies like early partial monetizations and dividend recapitalizations.
How to Prepare for Leveraged Buyouts (LBO) Interviews
Memorize the four IRR rules of thumb (2x in 3 years is roughly 26%, 3x in 3 years is roughly 44%, 2x in 5 years is roughly 15%, 3x in 5 years is roughly 25%) and practice applying them instantly. Nearly every paper LBO ends with an IRR estimate, and quick mental math here signals strong preparation.
Practice paper LBOs under timed conditions aiming for 8 to 10 minutes per problem. The advanced session includes multi-step scenarios that require you to compute entry equity, project debt paydown, calculate exit equity, and derive both MOIC and IRR without a spreadsheet.
Understand the Sources & Uses framework deeply — not just the mechanics but why each item appears. Be ready to explain seller notes, rollover equity, and the difference between refinancing existing debt vs. assuming it, as these details come up in advanced questioning.
Be prepared to explain why more leverage does not always mean higher returns. The sessions cover the diminishing returns of excessive debt and the negative carry concept, and interviewers increasingly test whether candidates understand the risk side of leverage, not just the upside.

The IB Vine technical prep is beyond helpful, it's so much more fun quizzing myself every now and then vs. reading through the guides again.

I personally found that the 'IB Vine Select' collection had some of the exact questions I was asked in my Qatalyst interviews.
Analyst
Thanks for starting up IB Vine. Couldn't have landed my offer without your help!

I honestly think you're doing gods work since IB Vine democratizes the whole interview process and helps a lot of students ace their interviews.

I found this website really helpful, which also helps me better prepare for the technical interview in IBD position and get an offer.

Check out IB Vine, specifically the 'IB Vine Select' questions. Once you can get a handle of those, it seems like you are in a spot where you're applying the concepts rather than simply memorizing them

I've used IB Vine for my recruitment, and I could not imagine the journey without it. Thank you for creating a phenomenal resource.

Beyond the 400 questions guide, try to understand a deeper level and the underlying concepts of the questions being asked. Use ibvine, it really helps.

IB Vine has excellent questions, especially multistep ones. In my experience I've gotten grilled on accretion/dilution, bond math, and merger model questions. IB Vine has great practice for all of those.

As a nontraditional transfer student who has been rendered unavailable to many resources at my university (Leadership positions at clubs, immediately behind the recruiting cycle, etc.) IB Vine has been an absolute game changer in my IB prep.

From my experience interviewing FT for IB, it’s not enough to just know the 400 questions anymore (it’s a good starting point) but to look at even more advanced questions. Would recommend IB Vine.

heard all the new kids use IB Vine now. the questions on IB Vine helped me get the concepts down when I had to recruit and make a lot of BB/MM interviews easier than I expected for techs

Just got off the phone with a kid who interned at a Dallas PE firm. He mentioned that IB Vine helped him secure that internship as well as his Summer Analyst offer, especially since he came from a non-target with no resources.
