How to Prepare for Centerview Partners Interviews

1

Prepare for Rapid-Fire Mental Math

Centerview interviews feature back-to-back multiplication, squaring, and percentage calculations with no calculator. Practice breaking problems into algebraic identities like difference of squares and binomial expansion so you can solve multi-digit problems quickly and out loud.

2

Master Brain Teasers and Lateral Thinking

The interview includes several classic brain teasers (lily pad doubling, elevator riddles, algebraic comparison puzzles) alongside technical questions. Practice verbalizing your reasoning clearly and working through logic problems under time pressure.

3

Know Current Events and Market Awareness

The interview opens with questions about the Fed Chairman, interest rate policy, and fundamental definitions of financial concepts. Be prepared to discuss current macro events and demonstrate you follow markets beyond just textbook knowledge.

4

Study Niche Technical Concepts Like NRR/GRR and PIK Debt

Beyond standard accounting and valuation, Centerview tests knowledge of SaaS metrics (NRR versus GRR, logo expansion), PIK interest mechanics and their LBO implications, and stock-based compensation treatment in DCFs. These less common topics can differentiate a strong candidate.

What Makes Centerview Partners Interviews Unique

Unusually Heavy Brain Teaser and Puzzle Focus

Centerview devotes a significant portion of the interview to brain teasers and puzzles, from classic doubling problems to algebraic tricks and lateral thinking riddles. This is more than most firms and requires specific preparation beyond pure finance knowledge.

Extended Mental Math Gauntlet

The interview includes a sustained sequence of progressively harder mental math problems, including four-digit squaring and multi-digit multiplication. This emphasis on quantitative speed is a hallmark of Centerview's interview style.

Market Sizing Exercises as Stand-Alone Questions

Rather than embedding estimation within deal contexts, Centerview asks dedicated market sizing questions (estimating flu cases in NYC, sweater revenue in Minneapolis) that test structured thinking and comfort with reasonable assumptions.

Probability and Expected Value Problems

The interview features a multi-part dice game question involving expected value calculations and optimal re-roll strategy, as well as a clock combinatorics problem. These require probability reasoning that goes beyond standard IB technical prep.

The IB Vine technical prep is beyond helpful, it's so much more fun quizzing myself every now and then vs. reading through the guides again.

I personally found that the 'IB Vine Select' collection had some of the exact questions I was asked in my Qatalyst interviews.

Thanks for starting up IB Vine. Couldn't have landed my offer without your help!

Check out IB Vine, specifically the 'IB Vine Select' questions. Once you can get a handle of those, it seems like you are in a spot where you're applying the concepts rather than simply memorizing them

I've used IB Vine for my recruitment, and I could not imagine the journey without it. Thank you for creating a phenomenal resource.

Beyond the 400 questions guide, try to understand a deeper level and the underlying concepts of the questions being asked. Use ibvine, it really helps.

IB Vine has excellent questions, especially multistep ones. In my experience I've gotten grilled on accretion/dilution, bond math, and merger model questions. IB Vine has great practice for all of those.

As a nontraditional transfer student who has been rendered unavailable to many resources at my university (Leadership positions at clubs, immediately behind the recruiting cycle, etc.) IB Vine has been an absolute game changer in my IB prep.

From my experience interviewing FT for IB, it’s not enough to just know the 400 questions anymore (it’s a good starting point) but to look at even more advanced questions. Would recommend IB Vine.

heard all the new kids use IB Vine now. the questions on IB Vine helped me get the concepts down when I had to recruit and make a lot of BB/MM interviews easier than I expected for techs

Just got off the phone with a kid who interned at a Dallas PE firm. He mentioned that IB Vine helped him secure that internship as well as his Summer Analyst offer, especially since he came from a non-target with no resources.
